I don’t think I’m being incongruent. That “instinctive desire”, like I said, will likely always be present. The idea that people like feeling a sense of belonging to a country, culture, or community is not bad and it certainly isn’t totalitarian — it’s very natural. But here’s the catch: people have the potential to be driven much too far to the extreme in this direction. That’s what Nazism was. And if my stuff sounds too “absolutist” to you, well oops that’s just how I write.
